Our practitioner at Premier Chiropractic Center, serving Bessemer, AL, and the nearby region, sees patients with back pain regularly. They’re desperate for help. We have a few tips you can utilize to reduce your back pain today, at least until you can get to your nearest chiropractic office.

1. Pay Attention to Your Posture

Poor posture stresses every aspect of your back. You put pressure on your joints which can eventually contribute to osteoarthritis. Your muscles and other soft tissue suffers from the stress. It’s not helping that it’s also placing pressure on your nervous system. And keep in mind that a lack of communication throughout your nervous system contributes to a great deal of dysfunction.

Therefore, whenever you’re standing, take a moment to think about how you’re standing. Is your spine in perfect alignment as you walk straight and tall? Or, are you shifting your weight to one side as you walk? Are your shoulders down and slightly back?

Consider your posture when you sit as well. Do you tend to slouch in your seat? Do you find it uncomfortable when you try to sit up straight? This poor posture could be stressing your back problems even worse or could even be the culprit behind your back pain.

When you sit, focus on sitting up with your back straight. Push your shoulders slightly back and down.

2. Focus on the Position You Sleep In

How you sleep matters in terms of your back pain. Though you can’t control the positions you end up in throughout the night, you can control the position you fall asleep in. Let’s say you’re religiously a stomach sleeper. You’re putting stress on your back because your spine isn’t in its natural alignment when you’re in this position. Instead, it’s putting more pressure on your back, including your joints and muscles, than any other sleeping position since it’s flattening the natural curvature of your back.

Choose to sleep on your side or back to keep your spine in the optimal position. These positions can also reduce neck pain as well because when you sleep on your stomach, you must turn your head sideways so you may breathe. As a result, you’re stressing your neck.

3. Stay Active

While you may feel as though you’re in too much pain so you need to lay around for the day, this is counterproductive for back pain. You can actually worsen your pain by placing additional pressure on your back that’ll increase your pain.

Mentally, lying around can also cause you to focus on your pain more.

Although you don’t want to lift weights, move heavy items, etc., it could help you get up and at least walk around. Do simple tasks that aren’t stressing your back much. You’ll keep your mind and body business so you’ll be less likely to experience or focus on pain.

4. See a Chiropractor

If these changes aren’t helping your back at all or adequately, it may be time to seek the assistance of a chiropractor. As a back pain specialist, this individual can determine the cause of your pain and optimize your nervous and musculoskeletal system function throughout your spine so you may achieve less pain without the use of pain relievers.

Besides alignments and decompression, our practitioner can also help you improve your posture. As a result, you’ll stress your spine and soft tissue in your back much less. We can also provide you with lifestyle advice to reduce your pain.
