The shoulder classifies as one of the most complex joints in your body. When compared to other joints in your body, it has the greatest range of motion. While that’s beneficial when you’re lifting items overhead, swimming, or playing tennis, it also means your shoulder is more vulnerable to injuries. Not to mention, wear and tear can take a toll on this joint.

Fortunately, at Premier Chiropractic Center, serving Bessemer, AL, and the nearby region, we can assist by offering treatments to ease your pain, increase your range of motion, possibly prevent the need for surgery in the future, or promote healing. Here are some of the issues we assist with:

Dislocation

When you have a dislocation, the humerus slides out of the socket. Due to its mobility, the shoulder is the joint most susceptible to dislocation. This injury may cause the following symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Loss of movement in the joint
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Visible deformity
  • Muscle spasms

Some people experience weakness, tingling, or numbness with this injury. These symptoms could extend to your neck and down an arm.

Bursitis

Bursitis can be an acute or chronic condition caused by an inflamed bursa — a fluid-filled sack that provides cushioning for the muscles, tendons, and bones surrounding a joint. Your shoulders are one of the more common areas for bursitis to affect.

Pain and stiffness are common symptoms of bursitis. The pain may worsen when you place pressure on the area or move it. Sometimes, the region will visibly appear red or swollen.

Moreover, this condition can be either acute or chronic. You could develop acute bursitis if you suffer from an injury. On the other hand, chronic bursitis stems from you repeatedly performing the same motion, which places stress on a bursa.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis occurs from either overuse or repetitive stress of a tendon in the shoulder, specifically in the rotator cuff. It can also occur from a sudden injury. Often, it stems from a sports injury from baseball, golf, or swimming.

With this injury, you might see swelling. It tends to cause pain that can interfere with your ability to move the joint as you normally do. Your shoulders are one of the joints most commonly develop tendinitis.

Rotator Cuff Tear

You have four tendons that comprise the rotator cuff. If one of the tendons partially or fully separates from the bone, you have an issue known as rotator cuff tear. As a result, you may have some of your shoulder’s range of motion. Pain commonly occurs as well.

A rotator cuff tear could arise when you play a sport or have a job where you use your shoulder frequently at your job.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that happens when you have swelling in a joint. As a result, you may have pain, stiffness, and/or a decrease in your range of motion. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis to affect your shoulder. This particular variety occurs from wear and tear that causes the cartilage on the end of your bones to wear down.

These are five conditions that you may experience in your shoulder. Our Bessemer chiropractor will assess you for these conditions and others. Plus, our practitioner will gauge the severity of your condition and provide you with a customized treatment to assist in healing or at least managing the condition, which may include exercise therapy.
