Ice skating is synonymous with the winter season. And even though Bessemer isn’t known for its snow and ice, we do have ice skating rinks. So, if you’re thinking about going this season, make sure you prepare adequately to prevent injuries and make the most of your time on the ice. Our Bessemer, AL, chiropractor has tips.
Wear Good Skates
If you’re an avid skater, invest in a pair of good skates. However, if you’re only going a few times this season, it might be in your best interest to use the rental ones. If you choose to use rentals, though, make sure they fit you well. If you’re in between skate sizes or have feet that aren’t exactly the same size, always opt for the larger size. If your skates are too large, they can cause blisters and be downright uncomfortable.
Don’t Bend Back
You’ve probably heard the expression “Don’t look down” when it comes to heights. However, when you’re on ice skates, it’s “Don’t lean back!” The extra weight you’re putting behind you can cause you to fall and land on your derriere. Instead, keep your weight slightly forward. It also helps to hold your arms in front of you. This will help balance you so your weight isn’t awkwardly dispersed.
Learn the Proper Stopping Technique
Don’t just barrel into the guard rails or rely on running into your friends to stop you. Before you get on the ice, know the proper way to stop. Bend your knees right before you’re ready. Then, turn the toes on both your left and right feet inward. Your heels should then be pointed out. You then put some pressure on the back of your heel. There are other methods as well that you might want to research before you head out on the ice.
Take it Slowly at First
Those who are new to ice skating or who haven’t done it in a while should start slow. Don’t feel pressured to travel at speeds beyond what you’re comfortable with or try tricks, even ones that seem simple like shredding ice.
Let yourself have fun as you skate, and you’ll gradually and safely improve. You can eventually get to the point where you can tackle tricks, but the safest way to go about it is to start slowly and get good at the basics first.
Warm Up and Stretch
Is it really a sports chiropractic article about preventing injuries if it doesn’t include a tip about warming up and stretching? Rather than getting on the ice, heaving your leg over the wall, and stretching, warm up before you get out of the ice. It’ll prevent an injury from your muscles still being cold when you’re trying to stretch them.
Wear Clothing That Fits and Is Comfortable
While you might see the pro skaters in little tutus and other tight, flashy attire, your primary focus should be on comfort and fit. Make sure your clothing gives you enough room to move. It shouldn’t be too loose, though, that it could get stuck under your skates, get caught on another skater, or even get hung up on yourself. Don’t be embarrassed to wear protective gear, either.
