Don’t worry, we’re well aware it doesn’t snow much here, but we do know that some of our patients like to go away on ski trips. For that reason, we’d like to help you stay safe on the slopes this season with a few tips from our practitioner at Premier Chiropractic Center, serving Bessemer, AL, and the nearby region.
Hydrate Before, During, and While on the Slopes
Proper hydration is necessary for your body to function properly. Your muscles need it to work, and so does your brain. Not to mention, when you’re dehydrated you might experience symptoms, such as a headache, dizziness, nausea, or tiredness. The last thing you want is these unpleasant symptoms that could lead to not being able to perform up to par. You then put yourself at risk of an injury. We recommend drinking water before, during, and after skiing to prevent dehydration.
Only Take Slopes You Can Handle
Especially when you first start out or only ski occasionally, only take on slopes you know you can handle comfortably. Read the labels on the track carefully and evaluate the difficulty on your own as well as you make a decision. There’s no shame in taking on the bunny slopes until you improve. You’ll eventually get to the point where you can handle the more difficult slopes, but it needs to be gradual as you improve.
Talk to an Instructor First About Safety
If this is your first time skiing or you haven’t been in a while, make sure you understand ski safety before heading down any slope, no matter how difficult or easy. While it helps to read online, don’t hesitate to ask a ski instructor for guidance. They can show exactly what precautions you need to take and explain in detail the proper techniques.
Wear the Proper Gear
When skiing, you should wear a helmet and goggles. These protect you from a concussion or other serious head injury as well as a serious eye wound. As you purchase equipment, always make sure your helmet is for the right sport. Different sports have different types of helmets to protect you in a certain way. Therefore, make sure your helmet is specifically for skiing.
Watch the Weather
Before you head out on the slopes, watch the weather report. Know if a snowstorm or other severe weather could be coming your way. You don’t want to be stuck somewhere if a major storm is about to hit.
Besides knowing the weather report, watch the skies. Know when any changes are happening that could spell trouble so you can get off the slopes.
Get Off the Slopes When You Feel Tired
Once you start feeling tired, get off the slopes. If you’re not mentally with it completely, you don’t want to risk drowsily traveling at high speeds in conditions that require you to think fast
Even if you’re not tired, don’t save the most difficult slopes for the end. Do them in the beginning or middle when you’re still alert, and your muscles aren’t sore.
Read Signs Carefully
This is particularly the case if you’re new to skiing because you may not be aware. But, as you’re out on the slopes, read the signs carefully. Anytime something happens on a slope, the resort will post not to use a path until the conditions change. Signs can also help ensure you remain on the path.
